7pm Brixton Academy Vast queue for the Ministry of Sound Awards,
sponsored by Galaxy FM. Not the kind of ’massive’ I had envisaged.
7.30pm Eventually (and shamefully) sneak through the media door while
freezing clubbers in New Balance shoes shiver outside.
8.15pm Track down Jo Beedham, account planner at Chrysalis, lounging
with her cronies in the Ra Ra Bar. She and Vicky Spencer, Galaxy’s
business development manager, ply me with a brewery’s-worth of beer,
dodge the camera and dish the dirt on their colleagues and jobs without
dropping a beat.
8.45pm Editor arrives and makes up for lost time by ordering three beers
at a time. Account planner Jez Campbell reveals he used to work in a
music studio - so he should be able to filter out the meaningless sounds
coming from our mouths.
9pm Awards begin. Boy George is a speck in the distance but his hat
shines out as a beacon of good taste.
11.30pm We wangle our way into the VIP bar, only to find it as VIP-less
as every other VIP bar I’ve ever been to. Consolation is on hand in
shape of more free beer ...
Noon, next day Awake, unable to recall the intervening hours but dimly
aware that I should be at work.
