6.30pm Detroit - Not the Motown city but the bar in WC2. They’re
early starters, these IPC Southbank girls, and we’re half an hour late.
They tuck into their chilled white wine and we neck beers from the
bottle. They ask if we might perhaps prefer glasses.
7pm I discover a shared past with Lara Anderson, via Emap and The Daily
Telegraph. Hippy-chic clad Charmian Denison reveals she had to ask
permission to go to the toilet when she worked at the News of the World.
Clare Dove regales us with tales of online shopping - following an
after-work drinks session, she ordered pounds 800 of groceries from
Tesco Direct and had to invite her sales team round for dinner to clear
some shelf space. And we learn the secret of fashion and beauty ad
sales ... always wear the client’s favourite perfume.
8.30pm Belgo Orders are put in for moules et frites. Dove is coerced
into ordering shots of schnapps all round. They arrive in assorted
flavours and in a specially designed wooden contraption that looks like
like a rower’s oar. Denison, who is far from camera shy, reapplies her
lip glaze for the umpteenth photo.
9.30pm Jane Reynolds is in training for the London Marathon and reveals
her special diet - no food but plenty of alcohol. Jacqui Greaves is on a
protein-only diet but has the chips anyway.
12am Four diehards head to Titanic - spookily, it’s as deserted as a
ship’s ballroom after a collision with an iceberg.
12.30am 10 Room After ten minutes, Reynolds and Denison plead early
morning meetings and leave us with their bottle of wine, which we
dutifully neck. Nothing left but to chat up some footballers. Isn’t that
Frank Sinclair with Jamie Lawrence? But where’s Stan?
