DIARY: HOTCAKES

Hotcakes has heard that the ladies at Cosmopolitan are getting themselves hot under the collar about a large penis. Apparently the magazine commissioned the construction of a six-foot phallus to illustrate an article, to be called ’Redesigning the penis’. But now it seems that the magazine has got cold feet, and there is some debate about whether the article should run at all. Insiders say the chances are it will go ahead as planned, partly to justify the cost of the monstrous erection.

Lycos head of European sales Anna Barez has always been a popular figure

with male members of the internet industry, striking Teutonic blonde

that she is. And her accent only adds to her appeal. It seems that when

the search engine shared an office with sister company AOL, she used to

drive colleagues wild as she sold rude words to clients. (For the

uninitiated, advertisers can buy certain words so that when a user types

them in, a banner ad pops up).

Hotcakes has been told that certain members of staff used to sneak off

and phone Barez from call boxes, just to hear her say things like

’knickers’, ’naked’, ’pantyhose’ and ’schoolgirls’. Sad but true.

Jim ’born to be wild’ Marshall, Media-Vest’s chief executive, last week

shared his candid thoughts on the thinking behind the planned merger

between the MacManus Group - Mediavest’s parent company - and Leo

Burnett.

’My view is that it won’t happen,’ he offered. ’It’s just a clever plot

to confuse the trade press.

It’s very generous of Burnetts because there’s not much else going

on.’

Men are fast but women are good. These are the results of a particularly

scientific research study conducted by Cosmopolitan and Esquire, which

involved putting some of their readers in fast cars and indoor karts at

the Battle of the Sexes Drivers’ Challenge at Silverstone

(pictured).

OK, so Hotcakes made that bit up about the women. But it’s true that the

men were faster.
