Diary: How long will MediaCom retain its joie de vivre?

Judging by an article in this month's Arena, working at MediaCom sounds like a right old laugh.

The agency features in its "You wished you worked for ..." section because of its apparent generosity towards its staff. Far from describing the sort of turmoil you might find at other media agencies (the all-night pitch preparations, the incessant client and auditor demands), Arena paints MediaCom as a kind of media Club Tropicana.

Apparently, 84 per cent are so impressed with MediaCom's "generous annual holiday leave, remarkable pension contributions of up to 20 per cent of their salary ... sabbaticals and free holiday apartment in Cyprus" that they "spend their days laughing with colleagues".

Rival agencies are already taking bets on how long MediaCom's £422,000 training budget will survive now the agency is owned by Sir Martin Sorrell's WPP, which has pledged to improve margins at the acquired Grey businesses.

"Making the workplace more fun" might become less of a priority.
