Once the elusive position on the list has been secured, there are the weeks of late nights and weekends devoted to honing that clinching pitch presentation.
So, after all this, the worst thing that could possibly happen would be to miss the pitch you had prepared so hard for.
Cut to WCRS's Golden Square offices where, after its relaunch and the scrapping of traditional job titles, staff have all been so busy working out who's who and who does what that they came pretty close to this very predicament.
The pitch in question was the Co-op presentation, which four agencies were lined up to fight for last week. On the morning of the pitch over at WCRS, its pitch staff rolled out of bed and traipsed off to their office where they set up their killer presentation. Then they waited for the client to arrive and they waited and waited ... until at the last minute a call came in to tell them that the client was holding the meetings in Manchester.
A mad dash saw them ripping posters off walls, bundling papers together and (hang the expense) jumping into a helicopter to make the quickest possible journey. The team made it in the nick of time. However, Diary wonders what impression this will have made on Co-op, which briefed agencies to advertise the benefits of its membership service, which include being able to "open a share account with an investment of just £1".
Stephen Woodford, a founding partner of WCRS, says: "It was an expensive last resort, but I have promised my partners I will take the bus to meetings for the next ten years to make up for it."
