DIARY: McCarthy's the star as Winner has his chips

Most normal people would groan at the sight of Michael Winner as they unwound after a hectic week with some top nosh.

When a plate of chips arrived for the J. Walter Thompson managing partner Enda McCarthy as he lunched in some bijou country brasserie last week, Winner couldn't resist striking up a conversation so he could nab one.

Several fries later, McCarthy and Winner were thick as thieves, with the Death Wish director confiding that he was about to star in an ad for Kellogg's and McCarthy unwittingly becoming the star of his Sunday Times column.

But if Winner was trying to impress his new buddy it was in vain - McCarthy is reputed to be a luncher of such international talent that it prompted pals at his previous agency, Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper, to create his leaving card entirely from restaurant receipts.
