DIARY: McWilliams looks set to oust our Trev from the TV adman throne

Move over, Trevor Beattie. John McWilliams, the chairman and creative partner of the McWilliams Partnership, is cutting a bit of a dash for himself as TV’s rent-an-adman.

Move over, Trevor Beattie. John McWilliams, the chairman and creative

partner of the McWilliams Partnership, is cutting a bit of a dash for

himself as TV’s rent-an-adman.

John recently browbeat the BBC into letting him review the latest crop

of ads for Business Breakfast - a thing it likes to do from time to

time.

It seems the BBC chaps were so impressed they let him persuade them that

viewers would also be interested in seeing a three-part series on ‘the

making of an ad’.

That series went out this week. It focused on how his agency set about

making a press and poster ad for Cellnet’s special Manchester United-

branded mobile phone using Eric Cantona’s trademark number seven shirt.

McWilliams was seen saying things like: ‘Cantona embodies all that’s

best about the Cellnet digital phone - good in the air, a great

international...and brilliant out of the box.’

With client plugs, exposure and soundbites like this there’ll be no

stopping him. What’s next, John? Newsnight? It’s worth a shot, and you

won’t have to get up so early.
