DIARY: Media man keeps his word with 1,000 Birds

While many people who leave the media industry say they're going to go off and write a book, it's not often they actually follow through.

But the former Media Planning Group partner, Russell Boyman, has done it, resulting in Round the World with 1,000 Birds. Bird fanatic Boyman left a 25-year career to embark on an epic ornothological expedition to some of the world's more remote spots.

All you need is a "shit and boring job, horrible colleagues and a draining lifestyle, he says. After three years of planning, listening to a birdspotters' hotline in the office, Boyman said: "A quick drink in the local, and I was gone. Ten years of work, all forgotten in a flash."

Doubtless, Boyman's tome will be essential reading for the industry twitchers Zenith Media UK's chief executive, Simon Marquis, the former CIA head, Richard Burdett, and the Sunday People editor, Neil Wallis.
