Diary: Murphy's manoeuvres in the dark are detected

As the advertising industry's great and good begin packing their swimming trunks, working on their six packs and waxing their fun zones in readiness for Cannes, a two-year-old mystery has been dredged up again.

In 2004, a somewhat tired and emotional James Murphy managed to find his way back to the Young & Rubicam villa and tried to put himself to bed (easier said than done when you have been out all evening sampling some of the best rose that the French resort has to offer).

However, in the process, the Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R chief executive walked through the wrong door and ended up walking all over a pair of sleeping people.

To his great fear, he realised that the slumbering forms belonged to William Eccleshare, the then head of Europe at Y&R, and his wife.

Gathering his wits about him and being fleet of foot he exited the room without disturbing the sleepers. Wiping his brow, he believed he had got away with it.

However, Diary has discovered that Murphy still does not realise Eccleshare has known his dirty little secret all along.

With Eccleshare now at BBDO, the new head of Y&R Europe, Massimo Costa, may have to put some Murphy traps around his bed this year.
