Diary: On the QT ...

Own goals don't come more spectacular than the one just scored by Nissan and its US agency TBWA\Chiat\Day. They have just had the humiliating experience of having to withdraw their latest TV ad for Titan trucks.

The reason? A rather unfortunate choice of music soundtrack - the Colonel Bogey March. Strangely, nobody thought about the link between the music and the Oscar-winning movie The Bridge on the River Kwai, a story about British soldiers forced to build a railway bridge for their Japanese captors during World War II. One internet critic, though, brands the decision spineless and wonders how many consumers made the link. Diary suggests a rousing chorus of Hitler, He Only Had One Ball to cheer everybody up ... The cider and vodka-spiked smoothies were flowing freely last week as St Luke's celebrated reaching the grand old age of ten. Guests were greeted at the agency's Euston offices by belly dancers and performing artists. Of course, a session at St Luke's wouldn't have been complete without a spell in one of the "relaxation rooms". One had shisha pipes and cushions, while another offered an audience with a palm reader who requested guests to tell him their "issues" ... Getting a job in advertising is stressful enough without having to do it in front of the watching millions. Doubtless this won't deter the hopefuls being brought together by the production company Shine for a five TV series on recruitment. An agency big cheese is being lined up for the judging panel and the winning employee will be filmed on their first week on the job ... They breed 'em tough at Harrison Troughton Wunderman. Nat Fine, one of the agency's account managers, has just represented Great Britain in the Honolulu Triathlon, completing the course in two hours and 17 minutes. Staffers who stumped up his sponsorship money, which is going to charity, have the chance to win Fine as their personal trainer.
