Diary: On the QT ..

For those of you whose holidays in the UK were ruined by bad weather or the odd argument, spare a thought for Rob, the man behind one of the industry's favoured blogs - "the musings of an opinionated sod".

After spending a large number of his posts complaining about his holiday allowance or lack thereof, the Hong Kong-based adman decided to return to his native Britain for his precious two-week break, only to be hauled up in quarantine with swine flu for his entire trip. Cue enraged blogging about his "worst holiday since my honeymoon and, let me tell you, that was a 'gold medal' in totall (sic) and utter shittiness". Mind you, swine flu does like its little joke. One of its latest victims is David McCusker, the actor who plays the sneezing virus victim in the Government's TV commercial ...

Doesn't time fly? No sooner have you packed away the sun cream than Harrods starts flogging Christmas decorations. What's more, the first agency Christmas card is on its way to more than 100 retailers. This turns out to be a shameless attempt by Michael Moszynski, London Advertising's chief executive, to pick up a seasonal assignment or two ...

Diary hears that the Government's "make things happen" TV campaign, starring Sir Alan Sugar, to encourage more apprentices hasn't actually made very much happen at all. Apparently, the advertising hasn't had many would-be trainees banging down the doors. And we all know what a bitter Sugar would have said had his own batch of TV apprentices produced a campaign with less than satisfactory results ...

Fancy getting svelte again after those holiday excesses? Well, there's always the Nabs five-kilometre run in which 12-strong agency teams (six men and six women) are invited to topple the defending champions DDB UK. The run begins in Regent's Park at 6pm on Thursday 10 September.
