Diary: Ray rues AA-beer clash

Diary has witnessed some examples of bad event planning in its time but is sad to report that the Newspaper Society's marketing director, Robert Ray, is quite literally incapable of organising a pissup in a brewery.

Ray had invited media agency types and members of the trade press to a tour of his local Tring Brewery, to be followed by a spot of beer-tasting and a fish-and-chip supper. Now, however, the offer of nutty ales such as Jack O'Legs and Fanny Ebbs has been withdrawn.

Despite months of meticulous planning, Ray has been forced to cancel the night on the lash due to a diary clash with an AA meeting. The event in question is not a regular meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous but the annual Advertising Association reception, which Ray obviously wouldn't miss for anything.
