The sales staff at the internet search engine, Lycos, can’t
function in the afternoon unless they’ve had their daily lunchtime fix -
a crisp salad.
With offices in London’s Air Street, just off Piccadilly, the company is
ideally located for a quick sprint down to the fruit and vegetable
market in Soho. So if you’re passing Berwick Street at 12.30pm on any
given weekday, don’t be surprised to see a brace of record-bag toting
Lycos staffers bargaining with stall-holders for half a dozen fresh
tomatoes or a couple of dewy-leafed lettuces.
According to sales and marketing director Anna Barez, the scene in the
company kitchen at lunchtime is ’like something out of an organic food
store’, with people piling fresh leaves into bowls and anointing them
with extra virgin olive oil. Managing director Charles Walker often
wanders in to express his horror at the frantic tossing, Barez adds.
Unsurprisingly, she stresses that the salad obsession is largely limited
to the female members of staff. ’Most of the men still prefer something
with meat in it.’ No problem - there’s a great butcher in Berwick
