DIARY: Torture by coach-ride for rival agency teams on way to Nottingham

Pitches are nerve-wracking at the best of times, and the last thing people need when they're psyched up and ready for action is to find themselves stuck in the same room as their fiercest competitors. A collection of wildly conflicting agency personalities, egos and agendas jostling for space - what could be worse? Well, being crammed into a coach with the same rivals for hours en route to a pitch is probably as good a place to start as any.

Yes, for the recent Powergen pitch, luminaries from Delaney Lund Knox Warren & Partners, Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/ Y&R, J. Walter Thompson and Soul were forced to squeeze themselves into a coach and be driven, all together, up to a call centre in Nottingham.

All of which sounds like an interesting enough scenario, given the competitive nature of agency staff.

But then events took a turn - or indeed, quite a few turns, twists and shortcuts over the course of many miles - for the worse when the coach's driver managed to get the whole party hopelessly lost in the wilds of middle England.

Indeed, unconfirmed sources suggest the hapless driver took more than four hours to wend his rather circuitous route up the M1. And after all that, the poor pitch team were faced with a trip to another call centre in Rotherham immediately afterwards.
