The Diary has the dubious honour of announcing that Michael Winner, film
director and possibly one of the most irritating scribes in Fleet Street
(‘Winner’s Dinners’, Sunday Times) is to make commercials.
Winner has been signed up by Real Creatives Worldwide, home to Ken
Stewart, maker of the polar bear spots for Coca-Cola, and Sheila
Metzner, who has done ads for Calvin Klein, among others.
‘He’d be good at anything action-packed,’ enthuses Malcolm Rasala of
Real Creatives. ‘You know, like taking Milk Tray into the 21st century,
or he’d be good at car commercials - something like Tony Kaye’s Volvo
work.’
When pressed on the sort of creative directors that might be tempted,
Rasala responded: ‘Oh, I’d like to think someone like John Hegarty or
Patrick Collister. And while no doubt he could do the smaller
commercials, he’d be better for a big-budget Ford campaign or
something.’
We’ll see, Malcolm, we’ll see.
