- Buena Vista Internet Group has agreed to buy from Daily Mail and General Trust 60 per cent of the UK football website Soccernet.

The deal will see the BVIG, which is a division of the Walt Disney Company, take over all aspects of Soccernet's production, design, editorial, sales and marketing operations. Soccernet is located on the web at www.soccernet.com.

The deal will see Soccernet become the cornerstone of Disney's international online expansion efforts. It will also enhance the soccer coverage of its existing online operation, ESPN.com.

Paul Zwillenberg, managing director of Associated New Media, Daily Mail and General Trust's internet division, said: "This transaction will help secure Soccernet's rightful place as the world's leading football site. With the reputation of our content and the international power of the ESPN brand, we can press Soccernet to its full potential."

He added: "ESPN is the recognised leader in international sports programming in television and on the Web, and this relationship will give Soccernet the backing needed to increase its position as THE worldwide football information provider."
