Don Sperring, the former managing director of Young & Rubicam and

the chairman of the communications specialist trade body, AMCO, has been

appointed chief operating officer of Western International Media

Europe.

Sperring, who is the former media director of Y&R Europe, will report to

Western’s European chief executive, Anders Liljeblad, and will share

responsibility for developing the Western network across Europe.

Western is up and running in the UK, France, Switzerland and

Scandinavia, with offices opening in Spain and Germany in the next few

weeks.

Sperring said the task was a similar one to his role at Y&R, where he

forged its European media expansion in the late 80s. ’Many of the same

issues are still relevant, things haven’t really moved on.’

Sperring, who has been a consultant to Western for 18 months, is

resigning as chairman of AMCO and is unlikely to be replaced directly.
