M&C Saatchi has hired two former senior account men on Renault to
take charge of its newly acquired pounds 40 million Rover business in
Clive Jones, who was director in charge of Renault at Publicis until his
departure on Friday, will run the account in tandem with Dave Downing, a
group planning director at Young & Rubicam.
One of their first tasks will be to appoint up to four account handlers
to form the basis of an ’agency within an agency’ being set up by M&C
Saatchi after being awarded Rover’s UK creative assignment in
The appointments renew a working relationship between Jones and Downing,
who both handled Renault business at Publicis.
Moray MacLennan, M&C Saatchi’s joint chief executive, knew Downing as a
board planning director at Saatchi & Saatchi when both worked on
Gallaher and Gillette business.
’Dave was an excellent planner then and he has since worked on Renault
and Ford so he was an obvious choice,’ MacLennan said.
Downing, who began his agency career at Saatchis 17 years ago, described
the job offer as ’really too good to miss’. He said: ’It gives me the
opportunity to join an agency I admire and whose culture I understand,
to work with people I know and respect and on a very high-profile
