According to unofficial overnight figures, the hour-long period drama delivered an average audience of 9.85 million across ITV, ITV HD and ITV +1 last night, a whopping 40.0 per cent share.
A spokeswoman for ITV said the average audience made the last episode of the series the highest-rating drama programme of the year so far.
'The X Factor' results show, which included performances from Celine Dion and Robbie Williams, enjoyed an average audience of 9.23 million viewers across ITV, ITV HD and ITV +1, a 35.2 per cent share.
Meanwhile, the rival BBC talent show ‘Strictly Come Dancing: The Results’ received an average audience of 10.32 million between 7.15pm and 8pm, a 39.9 per cent share.
On Channel 4, 'Homeland' delivered an average audience of 1.86 million across Channel 4, Channel 4 HD and Channel 4 +1, a 7.2 per cent share.
On Saturday night 'Strictly Come Dancing' beat 'The X Factor' in the ratings again with an average audience of 10.12 million, a 42.6 per cent share, compared to the ITV show's 8.32 million, a 35.1 per cent share.Follow @MaisieMcCabe
