Editorial: Ethnic imbalance needs to be addressed

Another IPA census. More evidence that the vicious circle that allows so few from ethnic minorities to make a career in advertising has yet to be broken. Well over 90 per cent of agency staff are white.

While this may broadly be in line with the racial mix of Britain as a whole, the evidence suggests most black or Asian agency staff are in back office roles.

The IPA has pledged to do something about this, but eliminating what has become a Catch 22 situation is proving hard. People from ethnic minorities are dissuaded from applying because advertising offers no role models. But there'll be no role models until the industry can recruit them.
