Editorial: MPs should revise press rescue plan

Propping up local newspapers by having the Government sustain its regional press adspend, as some Labour MPs are suggesting, is well-intentioned but not necessarily sensible.

The Government's communication budget is taxpayers' money and, as such, must be spent in the most effective way. That might mean investing more in online than in print.

Maybe those MPs might be better pressing for a shake-up of outdated competition laws that will allow more regional press groups to merge or swap assets.
