Editorial: Remember to always play to the whistle

Who says you can't have too much advertising? Certainly not the millions of football fans who tuned in to ITV's coverage of the FA Cup tie between Everton and Liverpool.

By cutting to a commercial break too early, the broadcaster caused them to miss Everton scoring the only goal of the game and to watch ads for Tic Tacs and Volkswagen instead. With ITV ad revenues set to plunge by almost a fifth during the early part of this year, an own goal like this was the last thing it needed.
