Editorial: About time lobby groups were scrutinised

Calls by members of the European Parliament for greater scrutiny of the lobby groups that want to bend their ear will be welcomed by the UK advertising community.

The Parliament plans to produce a report on these so-called non-governmental organisations in the autumn. "We should not make ourselves slaves to what NGOs say," the Dutch MEP Dorette Corbey comments.

For industry leaders, frustrated at the way single-issue pressure groups with questionable agendas can influence gullible MPs, the move comes not a moment too soon. This is a contest that needs to be staged on a level playing field.
