Ellis Watson, general manager of News International’s internet
service provider, CurrantBun.com, has abruptly resigned from the company
and plans to launch his own e-commerce venture.
Sources close to NI say that Watson, who has been with the company since
1994, was uncomfortable about the appointment of Alisdair MacLeod as the
managing director of News International Digital Publishing in July.
Watson is believed to be talking to Times Newspapers’ marketing
director, Toby Constantine, about the e-commerce start-up.
Watson launched The Sun’s ISP service in April. It offers Sun readers
internet access, e-mail functions, online sections of the newspaper and
internet shopping facilities.
Commenting on Watson’s sudden departure, MacLeod said: ’The Bun has a
strong team and we will ensure that it continues to grow and develop as
planned. A replacement for Ellis will be announced as soon as

run by its marketing director, Barni Evans, the operations director,
Bruce Vandenerg, the commercial director, Lynette Webb, and the
financial controller, Sam Clenshaw.
NI is still seeking a replacement for Watson’s previous post as the
marketing director of News Group Newspapers. Watson oversaw marketing
for The Sun and the News of the World until his appointment at the ISP
