Ellis Watson, general manager of News International’s internet

service provider, CurrantBun.com, has abruptly resigned from the company

and plans to launch his own e-commerce venture.

Sources close to NI say that Watson, who has been with the company since

1994, was uncomfortable about the appointment of Alisdair MacLeod as the

managing director of News International Digital Publishing in July.

Watson is believed to be talking to Times Newspapers’ marketing

director, Toby Constantine, about the e-commerce start-up.

Watson launched The Sun’s ISP service in April. It offers Sun readers

internet access, e-mail functions, online sections of the newspaper and

internet shopping facilities.

Commenting on Watson’s sudden departure, MacLeod said: ’The Bun has a

strong team and we will ensure that it continues to grow and develop as

planned. A replacement for Ellis will be announced as soon as

possible.’

Until the company finds a replacement for Watson, CurrantBun.com will be

run by its marketing director, Barni Evans, the operations director,

Bruce Vandenerg, the commercial director, Lynette Webb, and the

financial controller, Sam Clenshaw.

NI is still seeking a replacement for Watson’s previous post as the

marketing director of News Group Newspapers. Watson oversaw marketing

for The Sun and the News of the World until his appointment at the ISP

in April.
