Emap Elan has reorganised its ad sales operation in response to
agency demands for easier buying, access to portfolios and group
Sales teams will now sell four portfolios: youth, glossy, babies, and
health and homes. A planning unit, headed by the new corporate business
director, Cath Ware, will negotiate group deals across all Emap consumer
companies, including Emap Radio.
The department is also to be rebranded as a separate entity, headed by
the commercial director, Julie Harris, reporting to the Elan board.
’The goal is to have more control and raise the profile of the
advertising operation internally and externally,’ Harris said.
Staff are being sought for a creative solutions unit which will handle
advertorials, events, sponsorship and online. ’The planning and creative
solutions units will work together in spearheading deals, acting as a
gateway,’ Harris added.
The changes will go through a bedding-down process before being
presented to the ad community in mid-October.
The new structure is the result of several months’ planning, using
agency research by Steve De Saulles of De Saulles Associates and an
internal audit, featuring interviews with staff, conducted by Andy
Tilley of Unity.
Publishers have been replaced by business directors for each sector and
form the board of the new entity. They have sole responsibility for ad
sales and cost budgets.
’We will enter into a contract with the publishing directors to deliver
a sales budget,’ Harris said.
The hundred staff were presented with the changes at a two-day
conference two weeks ago.
The business directors and the magazines for which they are responsible
are Suzanne Grover (Elle and Elle Decoration); Jo McCarthy (Red and
Escape Routes); Sarah Lawrence (New Woman and Top Sante); Barbara
Patterson (J17, Bliss, Smash Hits and Big); Rachel Geary (Minx, More and
Looks); Jacqui Elliott (Here’s Health, Slimming, Period Living and
