Engine Group/BLM talks break down

The acquisition talks taking place between The Engine Group, which includes WCRS, and the media company BLM Group, have broken down.

Engine has been looking to acquire a company in the media planning and buying arena (Campaign, 9 February), but discussions with the BLM founders, Steve Booth, Nick Lockett and Charlie Makin, have now ended.

BLM, which is the UK's second-largest independent media agency by billings, has built up a strong business by making its own acquisitions and by cultivating a successful online arm, which is called BLM Quantum.

Engine was looking to build its media offering after making investments in PR, sponsorship and digital offerings.

In 2004, it launched a joint venture with Naked Communications called Element, but that has since been wound down following the departures of a number of key staff and some client losses.
