Event TV: Syfy creates shark prank to promote Sharknado 2 film

NBCUniversal TV channel Syfy and agency Taylor Herring joined forces to create a shocking stunt in a London fishmongers this week to celebrate the release of film Sharknado 2: The Second One.

At Steve Hatt fishmongers in Islington, unsuspecting customers were given a shock after a lifelike animatronic shark came to life and thrashed around on top of a fish counter alongside real salmon and fillets of haddock.

Special effects producers at Syfy worked with a team of four artists and animatronic specialists who spent two weeks creating the fake shark.

Hidden cameras in the shop captured shoppers’ reactions, which have since gone viral on a specially-created video to promote the film, which aired on Syfy yesterday (31 July).

Sarah Lloyd-Baker, vice president marketing at NBCUniversal, told Event: "Following in similar footsteps to the Devil Baby and Carrie stunts, we wanted to produce something that was very tongue-in-cheek, with Syfy being a very playful brand.

"Taylor Herring, which helped us to create and produce the prank, was the perfect partner after its work on similar projects."
