Tesco Mobile Ireland has utilised augmented reality (AR) technology to deliver two holiday experiences that bring the brand's penguin print campaign to life.

Working with Dublin-based experiential agency Backup, the brand has erected three six-foot tall storyboard walls within its stores in Naas, Balbriggan and Dundalk.

Using a free app on either the tablets provided alongside the experience or their own mobile devices, customers are invited to scan the walls to see 4D penguins skate, dance and play football.

Flyer versions of the storyboard have also been designed and printed, enabling shoppers to enagage in the activity long after they have left the store.

The storyboards, which are still available to experience, were erected at the beginning of the month and have so far been scanned 2,770 times.

The second piece of activity was a touring roadshow, which featured a winter-themed set complete with an 80-inch screen and a camera located above the set.

The camera enabled participants to experience the AR world first-hand, as they could witness themselves interact with penguin character, Cody. An on-site technician was on hand to control the actions of the penguin, who could flap his wings, dance, wave and give high-fives.

The roadshow visited a total of seven locations – Wilton Shopping Centre, Ballincolig Tesco, Dundalk, Naas, Balbriggan shopping centre, Maynooth and Clarehall shopping centre - for one day each between 3-17 December.

Tesco recently delivered a series of Star Wars experiences within 268 of its UK stores, to celebrate the impending arrival of the latest film in the trilogy.
