Herring spoke to Event about his humour site The Poke, a breast milk ice cream stunt that made global headlines, and a strategy he hopes to see implemented at awards evenings. 

I got into the event industry by accident. My former boss had sacked three PR agencies within as many months and said we should run marketing in-house. I said I had no experience. He said I looked like a fast learner.

I have worked here since… I launched Taylor Herring with my wife Cath Taylor in 2001.

I was attracted to this particular role because I felt like there was a gap in the market to do things differently.

Not many people know that in my spare time I run viral humour site The Poke. It started as a hobby but now has three million readers a month. It’s proved a great way to find talented video producers, writers and designers.

The best event I’ve been involved was… We once launched a restaurant by putting breast milk ice cream on the menu. We secured global coverage for a stunt that cost a few hundred pounds.

If I could do it all over again I would learn to touch type properly.

The one thing I can’t stand is jazz.

Outside of work I spend my time with family, friends and wine.

If money were no object I would take a year off to travel the world with the family.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be My friend Sally Osman runs communications at Buckingham Palace – that must be amazing.

If I ruled the event industry I would insist that awards events (the presentation bit) cannot exceed 30 minutes or a giant trapdoor is activated on stage.
