Express websites close

The four Express Newspaper websites formerly owned by Richard Desmond have been closed down following a fruitless search for a buyer.

The sites, Express.co.uk, Allaboutparents.com, sportlive.co.uk and companyleader.com were bought by SP Investments Seymour Pierce, a financial advisor to the Northern & Shell chief executive, for a nominal sum of £1.

It had hoped to find a buyer for the sites, which were said to be costing Express Newspapers up to £8m a year to run.

Their sale is a clear indication of the cost-cutting regime imposed by Desmond since he bought the newspaper group in November for £125m.

He has also axed 60 jobs in support functions and wants to reduce editorial staff on the Daily Express by a further 100. Fifty have lost their jobs on the websites.
