MY FIRST JOB: Former thespian Peter McDermott never got the chance to show us his Hamlet

’I count acting as my first real job because that’s where I really found myself,’ confides McDermott, account manager for the Money Channel at Granada Media Sales.

’I enrolled in a two-year course at East 15 drama school and my early

roles were cameo appearances on The Bill - when I played a kidnapper -

and Crimewatch - when I played a murderer. It became my ambition to get

onto television without wearing a black balaclava.’

After five years treading the boards, doing fringe festivals and

corporate videos, McDermott realised that he might never land a

Bafta.

’I had the talent as an actor but didn’t get enough breaks,’ he

says.

’I didn’t want to wake up at 40 as a sad old man who never saw his name

in lights.’
