- The Football Association has named British Airways as one of the five 'official' business supporters backing England's bid to stage the World Cup in 2006
BA is joined by Littlewoods, Marks & Spencer and Umbro, as well as Nationwide, the UK's largest building society, which was revealed as England's sponsor some weeks ago.
The five top UK companies will provide both financial support and help in kind, according to the FA, to ensure that England's campaign is of the highest quality.
They will be able to use the England 2006 logo on any literature they produce, but the real benefits if successful will be financial ones. Visitors to England for Euro 96 spent around £125 million and the spending impact of a World Cup tournament is expected to be far in excess of that sum. Up to one million tourists are expected for the World Cup in France this summer.
Sir Colin Marshall, chief business ambassador for the campaign and chairman of British Airways, commented: "The support of these top companies is vital to the success of our campaign. We know we have the best of British backing our bid. Business is being given the opportunity to be part of a dynamic campaign around our most popular sport."
