Foyles is running a two-week book festival until 16 October to promote the store's opening, which will feature well known authors including Martina Cole, Jeffrey Archer, Rick Stein and Cressida Cowell.

The opening festival will launch a year-round programme of events, ranging from book signings with bestselling authors, children's creative activities and book clubs to debates and live music.

Children's events will be an important part of the experience to help establish the shop as a destination for families.

The new store includes a cafe and has been designed to be "a cultural and social hub". Staff have been equipped with iPads to enable them to order any out of stock books to be sent directly to a customer's home.

Andy Quinn, head of events at Foyles, said: "I'm really proud of the festival of events we've put together to celebrate the opening of our Chelmsford shop, but it doesn't end there. The events programme in Chelmsford is going to be key to the success of the shop, and I'm looking forward to working with Mark and the team on creating memorable experiences for the book lovers of Essex."

Last year, Foyles celebrated the festive season with a Christmas Craft Fair at its flagship store on Charing Cross Road in London.
