Freedman, also a former head of marketing at the Football Association (FA), began his role as head of sports marketing for GSK's Lucozade brand in the past two weeks.
It is thought the position became available due to an internal reshuffle at GSK.
Freedman joined O2, the mobile operator, in August last year. His role involved heading up O2's activity across its music portfolio, through its 12 O2 academies.
Prior to that, he spent two years at the FA where he launched the Respect campaign, a football-wide imitative to improve behaviour in the game.
Lucozade this month struck a four-year sponsorship deal with Powerleague, the five-a-side football centre operator.
The move marked Lucozade’s first major title sponsorship in football.
O2 confirmed Freedman’s departure. He has yet to be replaced.
