Future joins Sudoku bandwagon with monthly title

LONDON - Future is looking to cash in on the nation's obsession with Suduko puzzles with the launch of a monthly magazine called Total Su Doku.

Future's move is a clear indication that publishers consider Sudoku fanatics a lucrative prospect.

The first issue of the 68-page title, which is filled with more than 100 Suduko puzzles, will be available from newsstands on Thursday August 25 at a price of £1.99.

The puzzles are graded in three levels of difficulty and the magazine contains tips on how to solve them.

The title will be published by Future's Living Group, which houses other puzzle titles, including Puzzle Monthly, Logical Challenge and Portable Puzzles' Arrows. Total Su Doku's initial print-run will be 38,000.

Justine Wall, Future Living publisher, said: "Sudoku is the biggest puzzle craze since the Rubik's cube way back in the 1980s and everyone is talking about it, many doing the puzzle on the commute to work or at lunchtime."

She added: "Total Su Doku will do its bit to satisfy the needs of puzzle junkies each month."

As well as the many newspapers that publish Sudoku puzzles for their readers, there are already a number of standalone titles. Celebrity mathematician and 'Countdown' host Carol Vorderman has launched her own 'Carol Vorderman's How to Do Sudoku' book.

Earlier this month, it was tipped that Emap, Future and IPC Media were to make bids for specialist publisher Puzzler Media, which has been put up for sale with a £100m price tag by equity company ABN Amro.

However Future could be out of the running, having just spent £30.5m buying 38 titles from Highbury House.
