Global: W Hotels floats giant 'W' down Amsterdam canal

W Amsterdam celebrated its opening last Friday (9 October) by planting a brightly lit 'W' installation in one of the city's famous canals.

The installation travelled up the Singel canal from Koningsplein to Oude Spiegelstraat, drawing the attention of locals and tourists alike along the way.

The inflatable ‘W’ concluded its journey outside the city's old telephone exchange building – the new home of W Amsterdam.

The inflatable ‘W’ featured a timer, which counted down the hours, minutes and seconds until the property's official opening, and it revealed the hotel’s pool, Wet - the city’s first rooftop swimming pool.

The new 238-room hotel is located next to the Royal Palace and Dam Square, and it houses The Duchess and Mr. Porter restaurants.

W London is also marking the hotel's launch with a two-week Amsterdam take-over. The hotel has devised a special Dutch-inspired food and beverage menu, and its public spaces are complete with references to the city's canals, bicycles and windmills.
