At the end of D&AD’s judging week today (21 April), a total 749 Pencils (down 11.7 per cent on 2015's 848) were awarded to agencies from 41 different countries. The UK led the way with 217 Pencils, followed by the US, which had 143, and France, with 48.
UK agencies were also the most awarded in 2015 with 229 Pencils, 27.0 per cent of the total. The UK’s hoard this year accounted for 29.0 per cent of the total. The UK has to date always been the top winner at the D&AD Awards.
Grey London was this year's most awarded agency with 15 Pencils. Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, R/GA and BBDO New York all came second with 12 Pencils each.
Google also made the top ten most awarded agencies list with eight Pencils, matching FCB Chicago and Leo Burnett Chicago.
Grey London is being awarded for campaigns including Volvo "life paint", Tate "500 years of stories" and Mumsnet "Ellee Mae". The list of winners issued by D&AD today refers only to the quantity of Pencils won by agencies, not the prestige.
Winners will find out what level of Pencil (wood, graphite, yellow, white or black) they have won at the D&AD Awards at Battersea Evolution on 19 May.
The black Pencil jury will gather today to decide which pieces of work, if any, deserve D&AD’s highest accolade.
Tim Lindsay, the chief executive at D&AD, said: "A look at the list of this year’s D&AD winners shows how talent in the creative industries is now truly global. There are some notable additions to the top ten nations with the United Arab Emirates and Colombia winning an impressive 14 Pencils each.
"We have been impressed by the standard of work entered this year and look forward to seeing the final Pencil rankings at the ceremony on May 19."
