Hunt has been working on a consultancy basis at the newspaper since January last year, but was appointed on a permanent basis as its top marketer this week. He will report to chief commercial officer David Pemsel.

Hunt left YouView last year after its chairman Lord Sugar cut back the marketing team. Previous to that, Hunt held marketing roles at Freeview, Project Kangaroo and Sky Italia and was a partner at ad agency St Lukes.

Pemsel described Hunt as having a "brilliant media background".

He said: "He’s got a wonderful balance of understanding audiences, new technologies and the new media space."
