Velarde joins Underwired - the firm he helped set up in 1996 - as
interim chief executive, along with seven of the 20 staff made redundant
last month when Head New Media closed.
The agency put itself up for voluntary liquidation after it split with
minority share holder and ad agency The Lowe Group. Liquidation of Head
New Media's assets is due to be completed this week.
Underwired will now launch a new division which will offer planning and
creative work for brands across the web, interactive TV, intranets and
wireless platforms. The new division will see Underwired's headcount
increase to 12 staff.
Velarde, who explained that he had always had a shareholding in
Underwired, said: "I am now committed to getting this off the ground and
making certain that it works."
Dom Graveson, the founder and manager of Carlton Television's new-media
operation before joining Head New Media, has been appointed as client
services director at Underwired.
Both Head New Media and Underwired have worked together before on
projects for Snickers, Dun & Bradstreet, Domestos and Bass Breweries.
Underwired currently has offices in both London and New Zealand.
