- Phil Hall, the former editor of News of the World, has been appointed editor-in-chief of Hello! magazine.

After editing the weekly gossip glossy since its launch in 1988, Hello!'s editor Maggie Koumi is to step down. Commenting on her departure, Koumi said: "I have loved editing Hello! but thirteen years in such a high-pressure job is probably enough for anyone. I look forward to the prospect of being able to take life just a little bit easier."

Hall joins Hello! as it faces a renewed assault by OK! Magazine's owner Richard Desmond, who at the end of last year bought Express newspapers opening the way for greater cross-promotion opportunities.

Hall said: "It will be my job to enhance Hello!'s offering, building upon the upmarket readership."
