The cost to agencies of employing staff on freelance contracts is
set to rise after this week's decision by the European Court of Justice
to uphold a claim by the union Bectu that such staff are entitled to
paid holidays. Michael Burd, a solicitor at the media law firm Lewis
Silkin, said: "It will be rare for workers on short-term contracts to
insist on taking leave. But they will be entitled to claim an additional
payment for the proportion of their annual leave entitlement accrued
during the assignment in question."
