Inside the Red Bull Mind Gamers' escape room challenge

Energy drink brand Red Bull invited the world's the brightest minds to take part in the first Escape Room World Championship, which culminated on 25 March.


The final of the global escape room tournament took place last weekend, with teams from Slovenia and Ukraine battling it out in Budapest. The teams were pitted against each other, and had to complete puzzles based on quantum physics as they attempted to escape from their surroundings.

There were seven challenges to complete before one team was crowned the winner. On Saturday, it was Slovenia who became the first ever team to lift the escape room trophy.

The tournament followed the Red Bull Mind Gamers interactive online game, which the brand launched last year. The platform aimed to test people's mental capacities with a game called Mission: Unlock Enoch, an online escape room-themed challenge which acted as a screening process for the live global tournament.

Some 9,000 people entered the online challenge, but only 24 national teams were able to go through to the Escape Room World Championship.

The online game and the Championship were developed to market the sci-fi film MindGamers, which will be released tomorrow (28 March) through Terra Mater Factual Studios, a production unit of Red Bull Media House.

The Escape Room World Championship's semi-final, which took place across 23-24 March, saw Austria, Switzerland, Germany, UK, Italy, Hungary, Norway, Lithuania, Spain, Estonia, France, Slovenia and Ukraine compete for a place in the final, but only the latter two countries made it to the last stage of the game.

Last year, Red Bull Music Academy staged a UK tour with stops at Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool and London.
