Instagram revealed a colorful new logo and black-and-white in-app design today, but the change has sparked overwhelmingly negative reactions on Twitter.
The familiar brown-and-tan camera logo has been replaced with a white, simpler camera outline set against a rainbow gradient. Within the app, all the features remain the same, but the blue banner and frame have taken on a black-and-white aesthetic. There are also new icons for Layout, Boomerang and Hyperlypse, Instagram’s creative suite of apps.
Over 72,500 tweeters have expressed their opinions about the "New Instagram" on Twitter. While the minority loves the minimalist approach of the logo, most reactions relate confusion and disgust. Some like the design within the app, but not the logo itself.
In a blog post on Wednesday, the social network explains that the redesign was inspired by the diversity of stories shared by photos and videos. In fact, 80 million photos and videos are shared every day, according to the Instagram blog.
"Thank you for giving this community its life and color. You make Instagram a place to discover the wonder in the world. Every photo and video — from the littlest things to the most epic — opens a window for people to broaden their experiences and connect in new ways," the blog states.
Although Instagram says the goal of the redesign was to communicate the vibrant stories found on the platform, a number of tweets say the logo reflects the 90s — the bright colors are being compared to Wordart, the show "Reading Rainbow," Lisa Frank’s designs and a "rejected starburst flavor."
