Look at this site and be scared. This is probably one of the most
awesome sites on the Web. It is an online version of a Canadian magazine
dedicated to subverting marketing and advertising.
It is sophisticated, organised and witty. As well as setting up things
such as ’buy nothing day’ and showing you how to jam focus groups and
customise spray cans to deface ads, it can also show you how to buy
airtime and make commercials for under dollars 2,000 (shock horror).
It has, as you’d expect, a hilarious section on ads that have been
’subverted’ - hilarious, that is, unless they are your ads. From
Benetton to Calvin Klein to McDonald’s, no-one escapes.
But what is also surprising is that it has some very intelligent
articles on young people’s advertising culture as well as insights into
ethical marketing and advertising. These are well written and, I
imagine, a planner’s treasure trove. Anyone interested in advertising
will find this site amazing and disturbing. Next month - how to jam
cyber advertising. Be warned.
