LONDON (Brand Republic) - Consumer magazine publisher IPC Media is to acquire rival Gruner & Jahr UK from its German owners Bertelsmann for an undisclosed sum.
The deal gives IPC control of G&J’s two main UK titles: the monthly Prima, with a circulation of 413,000; and Best, with a weekly circulation of 462,000. IPC also takes over Your Home, with sales of 180,000; Focus, with 62,000 sales; and Prima Baby, which sells 51,000 copies.
Prima was G&J’s first UK launch in 1986 and was followed by Best in 1987.
G&J also has operations in France, where it owns the country’s second largest publisher, Prisma Presse. In the US, it has a 100% stake in Gruner & Jahr USA. G&J’s current ownership stands at 75% by Bertelsmann and 25% by the Jahr family in Hamburg.
IPC already publishes 19 women’s titles with which the G&J stable could clash. These include Marie Claire, Essentials, Woman’s Weekly, Family Circle and Woman’s Own, plus nine home and garden titles. The publisher carries £540m in debt.
