- ITV has announced that it wants to launch its own Saturday night football highlights show just one month after poaching the BBC's Match of the Day veteran Des Lynam.
Brian Barwick, head of ITV sport and a former BBC sports executive, said yesterday that ITV was very keen to have Premiership highlights on Saturday night.
Match of the Day, presented since Lynam left by Gary Lineker, attracts a stable audience of 4.5 million. ITV's intention to offer a similar show would mean it joining another party, either a satellite company or cable operator, to bid for the entire Premier League contract shared between the BBC for recorded games and Sky for live matches.
Lynam left the BBC complaining that it showed Match of the Day too late at night.
