ITV has kicked off the search for media and creative agencies that

will promote its official football website, itv-fooball.co.uk. The

site’s managers are in talks with a creative agency, and are expected to

make an appointment soon.

Zenith, BBJ, Starcom Motive and CDP have been invited to pitch for the

media, which will launch both on- and offline in September.

The site, which was launched to coincide with ITV’s coverage of the Euro

2000 football tournament, is aiming to position itself as a serious

competitor to established sites such as sportal.com, sports.com and

soccer.net. It is aiming to capitalise on the raft of celebrity sports

personalities in ITV’s portfolio, such as Des Lynam, to drive traffic to

the site.

Itv-football.co.uk will be used to promote ITV’s exclusive coverage of

the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup. It will offer exclusive

Premiership football coverage next season following ITV’s recent

acquisition of the rights. The site will also be covering Scottish

league football and Italian football.

United Broadcast & Entertainment won the contract to produce the website

for ITV in May this year.

Fumi Okiji, the marketing co-ordinator of itv-football. co.uk, said: ’As

well as extending the existing ITV football brands, the marketing

strategy will focus on driving traffic and building loyalty to the

website.

’The agencies appointed will have shown a way through the cluttered

market in which we are operating, as well as demonstrating a passion for

the game.’
