Ellis’ 15 years at TUI in a variety of roles, including product development and publishing, mean that he knows the business inside out, something that is recognised by his position on the board. An advocate of investing more in content, he believes that marketing has to extend beyond the promotion of the package holiday and into the realms of creating a brand distinct from that of its rivals. Examples include a crowdsourced ‘#YourBigDay’ wedding campaign for Thomson, with a couple selected by Facebook users, while a one-eyed teddy-bear character, Miles, was introduced in the brand’s autumn ‘Discover your smile’ campaign.
