Mesquita will start his new role on 15 December, according to Ad Age. He will oversee brands spanning baby care, skin and hair care, over-the-counter medicines and treatments, oral health, nutrition and vision.
Brands include Benadryl, Listerine, Savlon and Neutrogena.
Mesquita quit P&G in June last year as part of a wider group reshuffle that saw the company hand extra duties to its existing group presidents.
He joined P&G in 1984, leading units such as home care, fabric care and pet care. He also held new business and innovation roles, and was credited for the rejuvenation of home care brands such as Febreze.
Mesquita will lead the consumer group operating committee in his new role, and will become part of the management committee at Johnson & Johnson. He will report to Sandi Peterson, the worldwide chair.
According to reporters, Peterson said:"I'm confident that Jorge's demonstrated leadership, his commitment to brand building, and his systemic approach to driving results and developing talent will maintain and extend the momentum and strategic clarity our consumer group Operating Committee has established."
