Reports said that the company was talking to Martin Gilbert, the chief executive of the investment group Aberdeen Asset Management, property developer Mark Shaw and Ben Thomson, a merchant banker, about a potential sale of the title.
The newspaper owner issued a profit warning in May and said at the time that it was likely to breach banking covenants.
There is also speculation DC Thomson is interested in acquiring The Scotsman and has held talks with Johnston Press.
